Memorial Day

Battlefield G’burg Penn
July 4, 1863
Dear Mother
I am a prisoner of war and mortally wounded. I can live but a few hours more, at best; was shot within 50 yards of the enemy’s line. They have been exceedingly kind to me. I have no doubt of the final result of the battle and hope I may live long enough to hear the shouts of victory yet before I die.
I am very weak—Do not grieve my loss—I had hoped to have been spared, but a righteous God had ordered otherwise, and I feel prepared to trust my care in his hands—Farewell to you all. Pray that God may receive my soul.
Your affectionate son,
